Unamuno, Miguel de

(1864–1937)
   Philosopher.
Unamuno was born in Bilbao, Spain. He was educated in Madrid and for much of his life was Professor of Greek at Salamanca. In 1924, however, he was exiled to the Canary Islands for his political views, which were out of harmony with those of the current dictatorship. He was the author of a variety of works, mainly advocating distrust and doubt and demonstrating the less than adequate nature of dogmatic theology. He regarded himself as a Roman Catholic, but two of his books were placed on the Index. His best-known works, in their English titles, were The Tragic Sense of Life in Men and Peoples and The Agony of Christianity. As he himself put it: ‘My painful duty is . . . to sow in men the seeds of doubt, of distrust, of disquiet, even of despair’.
